Choosing between Tooth Whitening Systems
If you want whiter teeth, you have got lots of choices at your disposal. However, they fall into two main categories -- professional and at home whitening. There are advantages and disadvantages to both professional and at home tooth whitening systems, and understanding them will help you make the best choice for you. First, let's explore professional whitening, which is performed by a dentist:
Professional Tooth Whitening
In office or professional tooth whitening is the most expensive way to whiten your teeth. It's also the most effective, taking only an hour from start to finish. Most professional bleaching treatments use a hydrogen peroxide based gel in conjunction with a light or laser which activates the gel. You can expect your teeth to be up to eight shades whiter after a professional treatment, which is a substantial difference. However, there are a few downsides to this kind of whitening. One is sensitivity -- a common side effect of many tooth whitening procedures. The other is price. Professional whitening can cost up to $1,000 depending on various factors. However, some cosmetic dentists provide financing to make handling the cost a bit easier.
At Home Tooth Whitening
Some people in search of whiter teeth choose to do so at home. This is certainly the most cost-efficient way to a brighter smile. There are at home whitening products that cost under $10, and at home whitening products that cost over $100. Some of the most affordable and popular whitening products on store shelves include the Crest Whitestrips line and the Colgate Simply White line. Rembrandt, made by the Oral B company, is also another good drugstore selection. Most home whitening treatments are applied once or twice daily for a week or more before maximum results are achieved. At home whitening products can be found in strip, gel, paste and even rinse form.
Whether or not you should choose professional or at home whitening simply comes down to personal preference. If you want dramatic results fast and can afford it, professional whitening is perfect for you. However, if you want something cheaper and don't mind waiting a week, at home whitening is probably your best choice.
